ORION is a 4-year project that has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. ORION means “Open Responsible research and Innovation to further Outstanding kNowledge”.
The main target groups of ORION are research and funding organizations (RFPOs) in life sciences and biomedicine as well as their researchers, management staff, and high-level leadership.
The participating RFPOs experiment with different approaches to implement Open Science. For example, open “co-creation” experiments with different stakeholders explore different ways to make scientific research more participatory, to align the whole research process with the values, needs, and expectations of society.
“Our long-term vision is to “embed” Open Science and Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) principles (ethics, gender, governance, open access, public engagement, and science education) in RFPOs, in their policies, practices, and processes to organize and do research.”
The ORION project has developed training content for researchers and professional staff at funding agencies on Responsible Research and Innovation and Open Science concepts. In particular, the ORION MOOC for Open Science in the Life Sciences helps researchers to share their science with the world.
